A pair of diamond stud earrings belong in every jewellery box, they are a staple piece that can be worn every day and in to the evening to add some subtle glamour. They are great as a gift to a loved one for a special birthday or anniversary.
Â
The first thing is to decide which shape diamond you would like to have in the earrings. Round are the most popular, like my Heritage Diamond Studs in Platinum or Heritage Diamond Studs Yellow Gold. Princess, marquise and pear are some other shapes that work well in a pair of studs too. Also, if you have two holes in each ear lobe you could mix up the shapes, for example wear round in the first hole and marquise in the second hole.
You can have your diamond studs handcrafted in a choice of different metals; 9ct or 18ct white, yellow or rose gold, or platinum. Do you prefer buttery yellow tones, bright silver tones or perhaps a lovely coppery colour with rose gold?
Â
The main design detail in a pair of studs is the diamond setting. Because they are earrings that will gently sit in your ears and not get knocked around like rings do, the setting choice is more about your personal taste, rather than choosing the best setting for security, as both will do a great job for earrings. Your options are…
Â
Rubover
This is where the diamond has a thin lip of metal rubbed over the edge of it, the whole way around the stone. You can even add an extra twist with a milgrain bead on the rubover setting edge, this gives it a vintage feel.

Claws
Claws are more of an open look than rubover, a metal ‘prong’ is bent over each corner of the diamond to hold it in place. With some shapes you can have a choice of how many claws your earrings have, for example round diamonds work with 3 or 4 claws. I can advise what works with the shape you like.
